Now that they are retired they have the time to get into the newly created VR game Last Horizon as beta testers. They have been friends for years, largely based on shared gaming experiences when younger. Unfortunately the story is about a very boring use of VR.Ĭontrarily, one interesting aspect of the story is that the MCs are retirees. “Last Horizon: Beta” is essentially just the story of some people’s experiences in a VR fantasy. Access to a VR fantasy world is a story in and of itself and there is no need to add things like people fleeing into VR because a meteor is about to hit the earth or the billionaire who created the VR world decided it was a good idea to murder everyone using his device so they only exist in VR. "The messages often mimic a recruitment effort and offer high-paying jobs to entice the recipients to download malware-laced cryptocurrency applications.Note: I listened to the audio book version but since that isn't currently listed on I am filing my review under the Kindle edition.įor years I have thought that litRPG was generally over dramatized. "Intrusions begin with a large number of spearphishing messages sent to employees of cryptocurrency companies-often working in system administration or software development/IT operations (DevOps)-on a variety of communication platforms," according to a federal cybersecurity alert issued last April. In late December, a report argued that the Lazarus Group is also pretending to be venture capitalists, potential employers, and banks. North Korea-affiliated cyber groups have also reportedly expanded their activities beyond hacks. "The FBI will continue to expose and combat the DPRK’s use of illicit activities-including cybercrime and virtual currency theft-to generate revenue for the regime," the announcement read. Since 2017, North Korean hacker groups including Lazarus Group and APT38 have stolen an estimated $1.2 billion worth of cryptocurrency, according to an Associated Press report. The strategy echoes previous attacks linked to Lazarus Group, including a massive $622 million hack last April of Ronin Network, an Ethereum sidechain used by play-to-earn crypto game Axie Infinity. The hack targeted a cross-chain bridge connecting Harmony, a layer-1 blockchain, to Ethereum, Bitcoin, and Binance Chain. While the American government has been previously vocal about the threat posed by Lazarus Group, however, it did not formally accuse the entity of responsibility for the Harmony hack until today. In the immediate aftermath of June’s Harmony hack, blockchain analysts tied the exploit to Lazarus Group using a combination of on-chain sleuthing and comparisons to previous hacks committed by the group. The FBI and its investigative partners will "continue to identify and disrupt North Korea’s theft and laundering of virtual currency, which is used to support North Korea’s ballistic missile and Weapons of Mass Destruction programs," according to the announcement. Unrecovered funds were subsequently sent to 11 Ethereum addresses. Even so, a portion of the funds were then frozen and recovered by exchanges when the hackers attempted to swap them for Bitcoin. The hackers used RAILGUN, a privacy protocol, in an attempt to obscure their transactions.

Once the sauce begins to simmer reduce the heat and let cook for 5 minutes. In a small bowl I mixed together the chicken broth, cornstarch, soy sauce, sesame oil and rice wine vinegar.Īdd the sauce to the pan and increase the heat to medium high. While the vegetables were cooking I started getting the sauce ready. Let that cook for 4 minutes.Īdd the bean sprouts and cook for 1 minute. Once the chicken was done cooking I pushed it to the side and added the carrots, celery, onion and garlic. While the chicken was cooking I cut up my vegetables. Let the chicken cook until it is no longer pink. Heat the large skillet over medium heat then add the oil and chicken. Because of that I used a large nonstick skillet. To keep this recipe low in points I reduced the amount of oil I used. If you prefer a vegetarian version you could use tofu instead of chicken and vegetable broth instead of chicken broth.Ĭut the boneless, skinless chicken breast into bite size pieces. You could also add snow peas, bok choy or baby corn. Most importantly, however, is the fact that Chop Suey is still a staple recipe to help home cooks and Chinese American restaurants alike ensure that their leftover ingredients do not go to waste. For the vegetables in my Chicken Chop Suey I used bean sprouts, celery, onion and carrots. Though its popularity has diminished over the years to other Chinese American dishes like the Peking Duck or General Tso’s Chicken, Chop Suey still represents a major highlight in the evolution of Chinese American cuisine and the history of Chinese immigration to the United States. Marinate chicken with 2 tbsp potato starch, 1 tbsp light soy sauce, 1 tsp sugar and egg white of one egg. Use paper towel to absorb any excess water. Rinse chicken and squeeze out excess water. For example, in San Francisco’s Chinatown, the appeal of Chop Suey and the burgeoning Chinese American food scene as a whole helped prevent the teardown of the Chinatown district after the Great Earthquake of 1906, as landowners and San Francisco citizens alike had grown fond of the Chop Suey along with other Chinese American dishes. Be sure that water covers all the chicken. Throughout the lifespan of the 1882 Chinese exclusion act, Chinese Americans slowly conquered such racial hostility through avenues like Chop Suey and other Chinese American dishes, along with the growing tourism industry of Chinatowns throughout the United States. More importantly, Chop Suey’s ability to appeal towards American palettes played a vital role in helping Chinese immigrants survive during a time of xenophobia in the United States. Regardless of origin, Chop Suey is a dish symbolic of many things: flavors reminiscent of home for a growing population of Chinese American migrants during the Gold Rush, a taste of the increasingly popular Chinese cuisine that wasn’t too foreign for the American palette, and the stereotype of economical Chinese American takeout, both for the customer and the restaurant. Like Chop Suey, Tsap Suei is a dish consisting of a medley of leftover ingredients the key difference being Chop Suey containing meat components while Tsap Suei only having vegetable ingredients. Specifically, Chop Suey possesses many similarities to Tsap Seui in Taishan, a county in China’s southern Guangdong province. Though it is a classically Chinese American dish, some food anthropologists argue that Chop Suey still has its roots in China. However, none of these stories have solid backing and the exact origin of Chop Suey remains a myth. Other stories tell of Chinese American immigrants working on the transcontinental railroad cooking the dish, given its usage of widely available ingredients. In hopes of satisfying both American and Chinese taste buds, Li asked his chef for an innovative dish that was not necessarily authentic, but would be able to represent Chinese flavors in a way that pleased the American palette. To compensate for the lack of fresh ingredients during after hours, the chef threw together leftovers and a soy sauce slurry in a wok, creating the first Chop Suey.Īnother legend states that Chop Suey was instead created in New York, when Chinese diplomat Li Hongzhang was hosting American guests in 1896. Drunken miners from the booming California gold rush walked in late one night asking for food. One common story cites the birthplace of Chop Suey at the Macao and Woosung Chinese restaurant, one of the first Chinese restaurants to open in San Francisco, during the mid-1800s. The exact origin of Chop Suey is contested, though it is widely agreed upon that the dish came from Cantonese immigrants in the United States between the mid 1800s to early 1900s. How can that be? In general, faster modulations have a shallow depth, and slower modulations are associated with a deeper effect. Liveliness works best when multiple sounds are playing together. The speed of the modulation as well as its depth depends on every setting. Liveliness adds modulation to your soundscape. For example, the 'Profound' setting boosts the lowest frequencies of the audible spectrum, and will have no effect when applied to the chirping sounds of cicadas. The effect of a particular tone setting will be inaudible when applied to a sound that does not have frequency content where the tone setting is active. The tone settings change the overall spectrum of the background noise, in a subtle way to preserve the sound quality. The tone and liveliness settings will be saved as well! You can assign a name to your set so you can easily remember what it sounds like. Settings can be saved using the 'User Set' section. These sounds are original recordings – not stock sounds – taken from my sampling sessions for myNoise, another website of mine. Noises Online differs from other background noise generators by its pristine audio quality and the variety of sounds available from one single web page. The uses of a noise machine are extremely varied! You can adjust their relative levels to achieve perfectly well-balanced background noise to boost your productivity, increase your focus, deepen your meditation session, or fall asleep at night. The concept is simple, works extremely well, and does not require expensive equipment, such as active noise cancelling headphones.īecause these noises are available through a web browser, you can pick the sounds you like the best. The idea behind an online background noise machine like this website, is to make use of the noises you like to mask the noises you dislike. Though the word 'noise' has acquired a negative connotation, it can be beautiful, such as the sound of the ocean, the rain, or a field in the summer. Noise isn't always the chatty colleague in your open-plan office, or the sound of your tinnitus when you go to sleep. Finishing it off, we see a beautiful slate capstone top. Spring flowers add a pop of color, making it stand out even more. But perhaps the most unusual and attractive feature is the herringbone design of the brickwork. It looks like it could belong in a museum garden or churchyard, which perfectly suits the large garden and overhanging trees. This beautiful brick mailbox is flanked on either side by a small square planter box, giving it a stately, vintage aesthetic. It does a great job adding charm to a sweeping yard while rounding off the driveway. The inclusion of flowerbeds gives it a whimsical feel while also breaking its starkness. And the sloping walls make it feel like you’ve reached the corner of some sort of castled city, complete with dramatic capstones. When selecting bricks for this design, it’s a good idea to go with sturdier varieties that require less mortar. This is one of my favorite brick mailbox ideas. This otherwise standard brick mailbox is elevated by the inclusion of a simple square flower box. It’s a welcoming nod to guests (who doesn’t love flowers?) and ties in seamlessly with the face-brick façade of the house in the background. The mail holder itself is unobtrusive – a hatch built straight into the structure. It also proudly displays the home’s street number, so there can be no confusion about where you are visiting. Overall, this is a classic yet impactful design that is both practical and intentional. However, it also has a light resting on top of it, illuminating it at night. You can build this yourself with some bricks, cement, a metal hatch box, and a light fitting. Like a tiny homage to a lighthouse, visitors will have no trouble finding you late in the evening. They are also often used as markers to direct guests to the correct address, as in the example above. This particular mailbox is elegant in design and matches the home’s aesthetic. Mailboxes do more than just serve the purpose of receiving letters. This one-of-a-kind design will definitely have passers-by turning their heads for a second viewing. At first glance, it presents like a miniature pyramid, with layers of rustic bricks nestled upon one another in neat tiers. But upon closer inspection, you notice a vintage metal mailbox nestled in the layers, at just the right height for the local postman to pop in a letter or two. Furthering the intelligence of this design, one of the steps serves as a resting place for the street number while simultaneously housing a cleverly incorporated slot for a newspaper. It’s striking, witty, and easy enough to DIY, provided you keep things neat. This is a definite must-build for those with discerning taste in architecture.Ģ.
That’s right, using one DiGiorno pizza I created three football pizzas! The pieces shuffled a bit once the cheese melted on the pizza, but they still turned out great, and of course, tasted delicious. I decided to surprise the boys by creating football pizzas. With everything already in place that way, there's less chance of your goal posts getting bumped as you try to arrange vegetables – or vice versa. Once you have your pizza-field setup, you can lower it down gently into the middle of your veggie sticks. That's why this smaller pizza was the perfect size for our snackadium. The smaller the goal posts, the easier they'll stand up. Plus, it's always good to have string cheese on-hand for kid snacks like this tic tac toe pizza or apple face food craft. I've found that string cheese also works in a pinch, and it actually tends to hold its shape better when being used for decorative purposes like a football pizza. Where things really get interesting is when you start chaining together abilities from the five different classes that grant you additional action points, either for one character or your entire squad. You may only ever have four troops at once, but they can feel like an army. The fundamentals of combat are about improving your lethality by flanking, using melee charges, tossing grenades, and other abilities, and it’s great. The only ones that ever got on my nerves were the melee units – including those Ticker jerks – where I could never quite tell if they were in range of striking my troops or not. They all have distinctive and interesting abilities to counter, including some that automatically attack if you get too close (countering the insta-kill Lancer chainsaws) and some who explode in a cloud of debilitating poison gas on death to discourage executing them when they’re downed. Gabe leads a squad of up to four Gears into battle against a substantial lineup of recognizable Locust enemies (introduced at a steady clip throughout with a gruesome close-up and a couple of tactical tips) that range from basic grunts and exploding Tickers to buffing Kantuses and tricky Theron Guards. Still, the dialogue is written and acted well enough that it serves its purpose of establishing the signature Gears flavor and giving us a monster to hunt without getting in the way. And despite some hints that he might attempt it, the villainous Ukkon never develops beyond one-dimensional evil. Even the heated friction between grizzled old Gear Sid and the prickly engineer/sniper Mikayla never amounts to much. He has his tortured past of having fallen from grace after leading an operation gone wrong and going into self-imposed exile in the COG motorpool, but being brought back for one last job doesn’t really change his mind about anything – he was fed up with the COG’s corrupt leadership before we meet him. Through some impressively animated cutscenes we get to fill in a few gaps in the pre-Outsiders Diaz family history, though Kait’s father, Gabriel, never really comes into his own as a memorable main character. Gears Tactics deserves to be a success, although it has been stymied slightly by the surprise launch of a new entry in the better established XCOM franchise. The story of Gears Tactics takes place 12 years before the original Gears of War – of course, when it comes to gleefully cutting alligator-looking dudes in half with chainsaw guns it’s very much business as usual. It’ll pay to specialise here, as a lot of the talents located on the outer edges of the skill tree are powerful enough to turn the tides of battle in your favour. There isn’t a “meta” layer like several other tactics games, just this series of tactical assaults, but Gears Tactics gets around this with charm: the combat is enjoyable and gory, the customisation tools at your disposal are powerful and each of the classes available have extensive skill trees, letting you build them out into one of four different archetypes within that class or even a mix of a few different types. This gives you something else to distract you with during missions, and tweaking your weapons between missions is pretty entertaining in itself. You find new items on the battlefield inside crates scattered across the battlefield, letting you find all of these items, plus weapon mods. |
